Vocabulary beats grammar: the unpopular truth about learning German

Think about the last time you got stuck in a German conversation. Was it because you forgot whether the adjective needed a dative ending? Almost certainly not. A nurse in Frankfurt, a software developer in Braunschweig and a student in Vienna all need the same Konjunktiv II exactly once in a while, but they need completely different words every single day.

Words carry the message, grammar polishes it

Say you walk into a bakery and say "Ich wollen zwei Brötchen". The grammar is wrong, and every baker in Germany will hand you two Brötchen without blinking. Now try it the other way around: perfect grammar, missing word. There is no sentence. You point, you mime, you switch to English. Communication runs on words first; grammar makes the words elegant.
